Thomas Brüchle

Thomas Brüchle (born July 29, 1976 in Lindau (Lake Constance) ) is a German disabled athlete who took part in the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics as a table tennis player .

Life and career

Brüchle studied education. After passing the 1st state examination, he completed his legal clerkship at the Park School Kressbronn from 2003 to 2004. Since then he has been working as a technical secondary school teacher at the same school.

Brüchle has been paraplegic since 1987 and is dependent on a wheelchair.

Athletic performance

Despite his disability, he started table tennis training at the TSG Lindau-Zech club in 1989. He soon took part in disability competitions at the local level and in December 1993 became three-time district champion in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Because of his athletic achievements, he became a member of the German national table tennis team.

In this capacity he took part in the starting class WK 3 from 2011 at the European Championships for the disabled. In 2011 he reached 1st place with the team and 2nd place in the individual. In 2013 he was again European champion with the team and third in the individual. He continued to improve at the 2015 European Championships and achieved the championship title both individually and in the team. In 2017 he was again first and third in the individual with the team. In September 2019 he repeated this performance. In addition to bronze in the individual competition, he was able to win the European championship title for the fifth time in a row as a team. Brüchle and team partner Thomas Schmidberger have been unbeaten at the European Championships since 2011 and have never lost a European Championship final together.

In 2014 he and his teammate Thomas Schmidberger were able to become world champions for the first time in the team. The two beat the top-seeded Chinese in the final. In 2017 they were able to defend this title. In October 2018, Thomas Brüchle was able to win his first individual medal at a world championship with third place.

He reached the peak of his streak of success in 2012 and 2016 at the Paralympic Games, where he won the team silver medal.

On November 1, 2016, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf for his sporting successes .

Thomas Brüchle also starts with the non-disabled in regular game operation. Since the 2020/2021 season he has been competing in the regional class for the Frickenhausen table tennis club. Also for Frickenhausen he starts together with the Irish player Colin Judge in the 1st national wheelchair table tennis league.
