Thomas Frank Heaphy (born April 2, 1813 in London , England , † August 7, 1873 in Belgravia , London) was an English portrait and motif painter .

Early years

Thomas Heaphy was born on April 2, 1813, the eldest son of the painter Thomas Heaphy and his first wife Mary Stevenson in St John's Wood , London . Nothing is known about Heaphy's training. At the age of 17 he accompanied his father to Italy , where he got to know the language and religious Italian painting. Back in England, Heaphy devoted himself to portrait painting and found support for his art for many years.

In order to be distinguishable from his father, Heaphy added the Christian name Frank to his first name in his early years , but no longer used it from 1850.

In 1831 he exhibited some of his work for the first time at the Royal Academy of Arts . In 1842 he married Eliza Bradstreet of Little Wenham , Suffolk , with whom he had numerous children. Heaphy traveled a lot, studying Christian church art. In 1844 he got an order for an altar painting for a Protestant church in Malta . Further commissioned work for churches followed. After his last trip to Italy in 1860, he published the results of his work in a series of eight articles in the Art Journal magazine . In 1867 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists , of which his father was president in 1824. The last four years of his life tied him to his home due to illness. He died on August 7, 1873 in the south of Belgravia in London . Seven years after his death, the articles in the journal were reprinted and published.

Well-known works by Heaphy are: " The Infant Pan educated by the Wood Nymphs " from 1850, " Catherine and Bianca " from 1853, a series with young peasant women from 1859 to 1862, " Kepler mistaken for an astrologer " from 1863 , " Palissy the Potter taken for a Coiner " from 1864, " Lord Burleigh showing his Peasant Bride her new Home " from 1865 and " Mary Stuard at Tutbury Castle " from 1872.
