Thomas Jaeger

Thomas A. Jaeger (born July 5, 1929 in Breslau ; † August 21, 1980 in Berlin ) was a German civil engineer.

Jaeger studied civil engineering at the TH Dresden with a diploma in 1956 on the load-bearing method in steel construction. The publication was well received and Ferdinand Schleicher suggested that he translate the book The plastic methods of structural analyis by Bernard George Neal on the load bearing method (published 1958). He published other translations and essays on the ultimate load method (ultimate load-bearing capacity theory) and was soon considered an expert in Germany. In 1963 he received his doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin (investigation of the limit load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete slabs). In his dissertation, he transferred the load-bearing method to reinforced concrete, supported by experiments. From 1968 he was professor and director at the Federal Institute for Materials Testing in Berlin.

Later he dealt with structural engineering for nuclear power plants (radiation protection, reactor pressure vessels). From 1964 he held lectures at the TU Berlin and completed his habilitation in 1970. In 1965 he founded the journal Nuclear engineering and design .

In 1971 he founded the International Association for Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (ASMiRT) and organized their first five conferences (SMiRT).
