Bruno A. Boley

Bruno Adrian Boley (born May 13, 1924 in Gorizia ; † February 11, 2017 ) was an American engineer .

Boley graduated from City College of New York with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1943 and received his PhD in aeronautical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1946 . From 1943 to 1948 he was assistant professor of aerospace engineering and from 1948 to 1950 he was at Goodyear Aircraft. In 1950 he became an associate professor of aircraft engineering at Ohio State University and in 1952 professor of civil engineering at Columbia University . 1968 to 1972 he was professor and head of the department of theoretical and applied mechanics at Cornell University and was then professor at Northwestern University , where he was dean of the Technology Institute and was retired in 1986.

He published on dynamics, elastic stability, thermal stresses, heat conduction in solids and phase transitions and applied mathematics.

In 1964/65 he was visiting professor at the Polytechnic in Milan and in 1972 at Imperial College London. In 1996 he gave the Lagrange Lecture at the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome and in 2001 he received the Daniel C. Drucker Medal .

In 1991 he received the Von Karman Medal and he received the Worcester-Reed-Warner Medal from the ASME. In 1982 he received an honorary doctorate from the City College of New York. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and President of the American Academy of Mechanics, of which he was a fellow. He was a Fellow of ASME, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He served on the US National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
