Thomas Joseph Ryan (* 1942 ) is a Canadian author .

Ryan emigrated to the United States , where he wrote his best-known work, the science fiction novel The Adolescence of P-1 (1977). In which he explained how a program spreads like a virus over the national computer network and ultimately develops into an artificial intelligence . Ryan anticipated the later developed computer viruses .

The book was filmed for television in 1984 under the title Hide and Seek .
