Thomas Klein (Germanist)

Thomas Klein (born September 23, 1943 ) is a German Germanic medievalist and linguist . He is a retired professor for older German language and literature at the University of Bonn .

Life

Klein studied older German language and literature, Germanic philology and linguistics with Günther Jungbluth in Bonn and received his doctorate there in 1973 with a thesis on the interrelationship between Old Saxon and Old High German spellings . In 1983 he completed his habilitation in Bonn with a thesis on the Middle High German literary languages ​​of the 12th and 13th centuries . The University of Cologne appointed him a full professorship in 1985 and in 1993 he followed the call to Bonn, where he retired in 2008.

Thomas Klein taught and researched historical linguistics, linguistics of the older German language and old Germanic languages ​​as well as their literatures. The main work is the research on the writing languages ​​in Middle High German, especially the project he initiated for a new corpus-based grammar of Middle High German. He is co-editor of the collection of short grammars of Germanic dialects series . He is also the recipient of the Conrad-Borching Prize for Low German and Frisian Linguistics and Literature from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation in 1981.
