Günther Jungbluth

Gunther Jungbluth (* 13. November 1912 in Cologne-Deutz , † 1976 ) was a German Germanist , literary critic , translator and university professor , was already in his dissertation one of the first to the from the 12th century coming Dutch -deutschen poet Heinrich von Veldeke and later published other specialist books on early Middle High German and German literature of the High Middle Ages . Life

Studies, doctorate and professorship in Copenhagen

After graduating from high school, Jungbluth studied German at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg and in 1937 he received his doctorate from Heidelberg University. phil. with a dissertation on the subject of investigations on Heinrich von Veldeke . He wrote one of the first extensive treatises on this Dutch-German poet of the 12th century. During this time he also dealt with the archive description of German-language manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries in the Heidelberg University Library, such as for Barlaam and Josaphat by Rudolf von Ems .

He then became a research assistant at the University of Copenhagen , where, alongside Peter Jørgensen, Heinrich Bach, Steffen Steffensen and Erik Lunding, he held the chairs of Louis L. Hammerich , who held the professorship for Germanic philology, linguistics and medieval philology, and Carl Roos , who had the professorship for German language and literature, was active. At the same time, at the beginning of the 1940s, he was busy with the description of the archives in the Danish Royal Library in Copenhagen .

In the mid-1950s he took over a professorship at the University of Copenhagen and held this until 1966. In addition to his teaching activities, he wrote several translations from the Danish language there, dealing with cultural personalities such as the most famous poet and writer in Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen , the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen or the philosophers Søren Kierkegaard and Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig .

He later published other specialist books that dealt with poets of early Middle High German and German literature of the high Middle Ages such as Johannes von Tepl (Johannes von Saaz) and Meinloh von Sevelingen . In the following years he also wrote articles in the biographical reference work Neue Deutsche Biographie, for example on the Germanist Konrad Burdach (1957) or the minstrel Friedrich von Hausen (1961).

In 1963, in a commemorative publication in honor of the medievalist Ulrich Pretzel , he dealt extensively with the poem Slâfest du, friedel ziere by Dietmar von Aist , which was probably composed around 1170, probably the first song of the genre Tagelied on German-speaking soil. On July 14th and 15th, 1965, he gave two guest lectures at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich on the subjects of Ackermann Problems and Grillparzer's “The poor minstrel” .

In 1966 Jungbluth accepted a professorship for German Medieval Studies at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and taught there until his death. In 1968 he was one of the signatories of the Marburg Manifesto against the politicization of universities, along with numerous other university professors .
