Obal ( Belarusian Обаль , Russian Оболь ) is a city in Belarus on the eponymous river, in Rajon Shumilina the Oblast Wizebskaja .

history

The place was first mentioned at the beginning of the 16th century as a village in the Polatsk Province of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . When Poland was first partitioned in 1772, it was added to Tsarist Russia.

After the First World War Obal initially belonged to Belarus, before shortly afterwards it was assigned to the Russian Soviet Republic together with neighboring communities. In 1924 this assignment was reversed. During the Second World War Obal was occupied by German troops from 1941 onwards, and the city was liberated by the Red Army in 1944 . In the meantime Obal had attained the status of a city and has about 3,000 inhabitants.

Economy and Transport

In 1866 Obal was connected to the railway network by the Polotsk - Vitebsk railway line. The economic basis of the community was in particular the timber industry and products made from the raw material wood.
