Thomas Shelby Ray (better known as Tom Ray , * 1954 ) is an American theoretical biologist and computer scientist .

Thomas S. Ray holds a Masters and PhD from Harvard University in biology. Between 1990 and 2001 he dealt with artificial life and artificial evolution on the computer and developed the Tierra program. Tierra is a virtual environment in which self-replicable programs change and develop through a simulated evolution.

Since August 1998 he has been Professor of Zoology and Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma .
