Thor (ship, 1951)

The coast guard ship Thor (in Icelandic spelling: Þór ), also known as Nýi-Þór (New Thor) or Thor III , was a ship of the Icelandic coast guard . The ship was the flagship of the Icelandic Coast Guard for many years and took part in all cod wars with the United Kingdom .

The ship was built from steel in Denmark in 1951 for the Icelandic Coast Guard. The 920-ton ship is 55.9 meters long and 9.5 meters wide. It was armed with two 57 mm cannons. The ship was completely renovated in 1972.

In 1982 the Thor was sold and used as a training facility for the Slysavarnarskóla fishing school. The ship was renamed Sæbjörg . In 1998 it was sold privately.

The namesake Thor is a god of Norse mythology .

The Icelandic Coast Guard already operated four ships called Thór: The first ship existed from 1920, the second from 1930. The third vehicle described here was followed in 2011 by the fourth Thor .
