Thor Iversen

Ivar Thor Carl Iversen (* 1873 in Kristiania ; † November 10, 1953 ) was a Norwegian oceanographer who worked for the Ministry of Fisheries.

He was an avid photographer and documentary filmmaker, and often used his cameras while working on the Michael Sars research vessel . In 50 years he left around 7000 photos and some documentaries about the Norwegian coast, fishing and polar exploration in the first half of the 20th century. These recordings have been kept by the Thor Iversen collection since the late 1970s. The Thor Cape and the Iversenfjellet on the island of Hopen as well as the fishing ground Iversengrunnen southeast of this island as well as the shoal Iversengrunnen south of Jan Mayen were named after him .
