The Thormann family was a Bernese patrician family . The family may have had citizenship rights in the city of Bern since around 1295 and belong to the Pfistern company .

history

The Thormann family in Bern can be traced back to Hans Thormann, baker and member of the Small Council. Earlier occurrences of the name cannot be brought into context, as the name is widely used in German-speaking countries. Burkhard Thormann, Hans' son, rose to the Pfistern-Venner level . The family consisted of eight Venners, 17 made it to the Small Council by 1798, and almost all of the namesake got into the Grand Council. The Thormann were bakers, tanners and butchers, but gave up their profession until about 1600 in favor of military and political careers. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many members of the family became merchants, engineers, architects or lawyers.

Individual family members temporarily owned the Lords Engi (Bern), Duillier , St. Christophe (Champvent) and Mathod as well as goods in Concise, Gerzensee, am Muristalden (Bern), Rosengarten (Bern), Bürenstock (Bern) and in Wingreis .
