Threlkeld

Threlkeld is a village in the Lake District , east of Keswick . It lies at the southern foot of the Blencathra , one of the more famous mountains in the northern Lake District and north of the Glenderamackin .

Traces of settlement in the vicinity of the place go back to the Iron Age . The name of the place is said to be derived from the Old Norse language .

Granite was quarried at Threlkeld Quarry from 1870 to 1982 . The Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum is near the village on the opposite side of the valley at the base of Clough Head .

The Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway stopped at Threlkeld .

The Blease Gill , here called Kilnhow Beck in the lower reaches, flows through Threlkeld.
