Platelet concentrate

A platelet concentrate (TC) is a medical product that is obtained from human blood ( blood product ). It is used to compensate for a lack of blood platelets ( thrombocytes ) in the patient through transfusion . These play a key role in blood clotting .

There are three types of platelet concentrates:

  • Pooled leukocyte-depleted platelet concentrate
  • Leukocyte-depleted apheresis platelet concentrate
  • Irradiated platelet concentrate

A storage temperature of +22 ° C ± 2 ° C must be maintained for all platelet concentrates. During storage, constant agitation must be ensured, storage being as short as possible, but not longer than a maximum of five days after donation.

Various causes (e.g. also drugs) or clinical pictures can lead to a lack of thrombocytes, so-called thrombocytopenia . If the number of platelets falls below a certain lower limit (50,000 / µl), this can lead to insatiable bleeding after injuries or during operations. An even further decrease in the number of these platelets (<10,000 / µl) ultimately also causes spontaneous bleeding, i. H. Bleeding without any external cause. For example, before operations or when there is a risk of spontaneous bleeding, these patients can be prophylactically transfused with platelet concentrates.
