The action takes place in the fictional world Erilea. This is ruled by the cruel King of Adarlan, who has forbidden all magic. This is the world in which 17-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien lives. It is known and feared across the country - nothing, it seems, can stop it. But she is betrayed and banished to the salt mines, where she has to do backbreaking work under inhumane conditions.

The chosen one

The first band plays a year after Celaena Sardothien's capture. She is offered to take part in a tournament of the king. The winner is the king's champion for four years and has to kill for him. Celaena accepts the offer and fights with 23 murderers and thieves, under the false name Lillian Gordaina, for the price. In the course of the plot, she gets closer and closer to the prince-throne Dorian Havilliard and the captain of the royal bodyguard, Chaol Westfall. The two men are only a little older than themselves and are among the few who know their true identity. She also finds a friend in Princess Nehemiah. But strange things soon happened in the castle. Participants are found murdered, and the spirit of the first Queen Adarlan's prophesies to Celaena that if she does not win, terrible things will happen.

Warrior in the shadows

In the second part Celaena is the champion of the King and to kill in his name people. But she defies the orders and enables the doomed to escape without the king's knowledge. She only confides her secret to Chaol Westfall and Princess Nehemiah. Together they make a terrible discovery, which is only a small part of the dark machinations of the tyrannical ruler. This seems to use the mysterious Wyrd signs to increase his power and suppress the magic. When Celaena's best friend Nehemiah is cruelly killed, she decides to take revenge on the king who has stolen so much from her. She begins to face her past.

Heiress of Fire

The third part begins with Celaena sailing to the warring kingdom of Wendlyn with a new mission from the king to kill the royal family. Before the trip, she confesses to Chaol that she is the last survivor of the Royal House of Terrassen, heir to the throne Aelin Ashryver Galathynius. Instead of planning the insidious murder, she is trained in her magical powers by a fae named Rowan. Because that's the only way she can talk to her aunt Maeve, an immortal Fae queen. Through this she hopes to find answers to the question about the Wyrd signs and their role in the suppression of magic in Adarlan. In the meantime, Prince Throne Dorian Havilliard discovers that he is gifted with magic, in a country where his own father made magic impossible and banned it on the death penalty. And Chaol joins the rebels who want to track down their missing queen (Aelin alias Celaena) and help overthrow the king. Meanwhile, Dorian begins a love affair with the spy Sorscha, who pretends to be a healer, but she is beheaded when the king learns that Dorian masters magic. So the king of Adarlan puts a wyrdstone collar on his son, which makes him a valg prince. Dorian tries to fight the demon, but has no chance to free himself from him. At the same time, some chapters play with the witch Manon Blackbeak as the main role. Like all witches, she was affected by the disappearance of magic ten years ago, so she can no longer fly and ages. The action begins when the king offers the witches to join his flying army, not on brooms, but on wyrd animals bred for it. With their help, the king promises to subjugate the grieving neighboring continent as soon as Celaena Sardothien has killed the royal family there.

Queen of Darkness

In the fourth part, Aelin goes back to Rifthold to find out how she releases the magic again. Arrived in Rifthold, she sees Chaol again, who has joined the rebels and is fighting the king together with his new girlfriend Nesryn. She learns from her former master, Arobynn Hamel, that her cousin Aedion Ahshryver is being held captive by the king. So she frees him with the help of Lysandra, who is Aelin's former enemy but is now her friend. Because both Lysandra and Aelin had to suffer from Arobyn, they decide to join forces to kill him. Rowan comes back from Wendlyn and tells her that Lorcan is hunting her. With a ruse she tries to get rid of Lorcan, but when she later tries to release the magic, it becomes her undoing. Manon gets to know Elide and more or less befriends her. Erawan demands a circle of witches to breed witch-valg hybrids with them, but what he does with them is terrible. In the course of the book, Manon has to go on a journey and Erawan uses the opportunity to imprison Elide in order to use her for breeding because of her magical abilities. When Manon finds out, she tries to save Elide, Kaltain plays no insignificant role in the attempt to escape and so lets her life. Manon sends Elide on the way to Terraces. There is also an argument between the thirteen in which Manon learns that her grandmother burned Asterin's stillborn child and then branded Asterin. At the end of the book, Dorian manages to break free of his collar with the help of Aelin and then kill the king of Adarlan.

The storm conqueror

In the fifth part of the ToG series, Aelin goes to Terrassen with her companions Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, Fleetfood and Evangeline to speak to the Lords and to take on their rightful position as Queen of Terraces. But the lords consider Aelin unsuitable because of her past and send her away again. Aelin learns that Erawan is planning an attack on Rifthold and sends Rowan to rescue Dorian. This survives the attack only thanks to Manon, who gave him his life and Rowan can save him in time. Aelin and Rowan then meet again in Skull's Bay to bring the pirate lord Rolfe to their side in the upcoming war, which they also manage through a ruse that would have destroyed almost the entire island. In Skull's Bay they also meet Gavriel and Fenrys, who have received the order from Maeve to kill Lorcan. You can pull both of them to your side for now. When Manon's grandmother learns that Manon saved Dorian and killed another witch for it, she decides to kill Asterin for it. Manon turns against them and has to flee, with the thirteen scattering. Erawan is hunting Manon to get her back. Meanwhile, Aelin sets out to find a "lock". On the way they take Manon with them, who was badly injured and carried to them by Abraxos. In this community they start looking for the castle and find a mirror. When they got back to their boats, they found a fleet of Aelin's friend who still owed Aelin. The following day, Maeve's army arrives and attacks them. Manon and Aelin go in the mirror and learn of Aelin's terrible future. While Aelin and Manon are in the mirror, Rowan and the other Maeve's army can barely hold in check. When Manon and Aelin step out of the mirror, Aelin, who has no more power at the time because she has used it up, falls into Maeve's arms and is kidnapped by her.

Wounded warriors

Chaol and Nesryn go to the southern continent to heal Chaol's wound, which he sustained in the collapse of the castle, and to solicit an army from the Great Khan for war. But when they arrive at the castle, nothing is as they expected, the youngest daughter of the Great Khan has committed suicide and the Great Khan does not want to give them an army. Also, the healer Yrene Chaol's wound is unable to heal for some reason. One of the sons of the Great Khan approaches Chaol and tells him that he does not believe that the death of his youngest sister was not suicide, but was brought about by someone. While Yrene tries to heal Chaol's wound, Chaol tries to track down the murderer, who is very likely also possessed by a Valg commander. Meanwhile, Nesryn falls in love with one of the sons of the Great Khan and flies with him to his second home, a small village where a kind of giant bird is bred, on which people or the soldiers can ride. But more and more birds' eggs are being stolen by what are believed to be huge spiders. Nesryn and the Great Khan's son try to get the eggs back and kill the spiders. But their plan goes wrong and they are captured by the spiders. They find out that Maeve himself does not come from this world and is in principle "the ultra evil". They just manage to free themselves and kill most of the spiders. Meanwhile, Chaol and Yrene have found the killer of the youngest princess, who is a princess herself but is possessed by a Valg. Yrene manages to get rid of this. The big barge is so grateful to Yrene that he makes Chaol, who falls in love with Yrene and Yrene also with him, his army available. Chaol's wound has healed and he can walk again, which he was unable to do before due to the complicated injury to his back. Nesryn returns soon with her princes and they drive back together (Chaol, Yrene, Nesryn, the army) to help Aelin in the war

Ruler over ashes and anger

Aelin alias Celaena is held captive by the Dark Queen. Locked in a cage in a secret place, escape seems impossible. While Prince Rowan searches half the world for his lost love, Aedion and the shapeshifter Lysandra try to defend their homeland - now without the power and protection of their queen - by all means. Old alliances are broken, new ones forged and strengthened. It all boils down to the last great battle that Aelin Fireheart and her companions must decide for themselves in order to save Erilea from the rule of the demons.

Celaena's story

In the book Celaena's story five stories are written, which are important for the background knowledge of ToG (Throne of Glass), as the stories are also mentioned in the actual books, but are never discussed further.

I.

In the first story, Celaena and Sam are in Skull's Bay to demand money from the pirate lord Rolfe for assassins whom he allegedly killed. Arobynn didn’t tell Celaena and Sam the whole truth, because they’re only supposed to supervise the transport of about 200 slaves. But Sam and Celaena are opponents of slavery and so the two try to free the 200 slaves. They only manage to do this with great difficulty, and Celaena and Sam almost died. On this adventure, Sam and Celaena get closer for the first time in years.

II.

In the second story, Celaena is on the way to the "Red Desert" and the "Silent Assassins" as punishment for having freed the slaves and Sam and Arobynn had previously passed out. Celaena stops at an inn and rents a room to sleep there for several days. Celaena quickly notices that the girl who hands out beer is watching her and seems very smart. When Celaena later happens to see the girl being attacked by several robbers, she intervenes and kills all of the robbers except for one who escapes. Celaena teaches the girl self-defense that night. At the same time, Celaena learns that her name is Yrene and that she actually wanted to become a healer, but had no more money to travel on and is now working here. When Celaena leaves, she leaves the girl a note with a message and gold.

III.

In the third story, Celaena has come to the Silent Assassins and is trained by them, while Celaena gets to know a friend named Ansel. One day Ansel has to bring a letter from the assassins to the "king" of the country. The way back runs quickly and they steal two asteroin mares, which are very valuable. The master of the assassins begins to train Celaena, which Celaena has been waiting for a long time so that she can get a letter of recommendation from him for Arobyn. Celaena notices that Master Iliad's son is particularly watching her and is fond of her. One day the assassins are attacked by the "king" and only barely make it. Celaena learns that Ansel has betrayed her. Celaena gives birth to Ansel and later returns to Arobynn.

IV.

In the fourth story, Celaena is back at Arobynn and takes on a new assignment. The victim should be someone who speaks out against the slave trade and wants to hand over the sympathizers to the king. Celaena kills him with Sam, but it turns out that the victim was a sympathizer of the slaves and wanted to free them. Celaena is angry with Arobyn, but has come closer to Sam. Celaena buys herself off from Arobynn.

V.

Celaena and Sam move into a joint apartment and buy their way out of the guild. With money problems they are now trying to get new orders. One day Sam comes back and says he got a very well paid assignment; they are supposed to kill the masters of the underworld. Sam said he'd like to kill at least one alone and so it happens. But the job was a trap and Sam died tortured. Celaena wants to take revenge and breaks into the lords of the underworld, but that too is a trap and Celaena is arrested and sentenced to work in Endovier until she is dead. While still in the prison car, Celaena gives up, but shortly before arriving, she decides to survive in Endovier as long as possible.

people

  • Celaena Sardothien: She is a feared assassin who is supposed to kill people as the king's champion from the end of Volume 1. She is briefly with Chaol Westfall. Her real name is Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, heir to the throne of Terraces. She is gifted in magic in fire and water and is a half fae. She is also very good at handling weapons. From the third volume onwards, she faces up to her past and decides to rebuild her fallen kingdom. She begins a relationship with the Fae prince Rowan Whitethorn, whom she marries at the end of the fifth part.
  • Chaol Westfall: He is captain of the king's garde and back trodden Lord. In the second volume he begins a love affair with Celaena, which breaks up after the death of Nehemias. He joins the rebels to protect Dorian Havilliard. There he meets his old friend Nesryn Faliq, with whom he starts a kind of relationship in the fifth part, which ends in the sixth part. He knows about Celaena's true identity and he is Dorian Havilliard's closest friend. When Dorian becomes king, Chaol is appointed to his right hand and travels to the southern continent to mobilize forces with Nesryn and heal his injuries. There he met his future wife, the healer Yrene Towers, in the sixth volume, with whom he returned to Erilea at the end of the volume to fight in the war. After Yrene saved his life, their lives are linked by a bond and both their lives and their strength are interdependent.
  • Dorian Havilliard: He is the heir to the throne of Adarlan, but is not satisfied with his father's ideas and publicly rebels against him. He's also gifted in wild magic. In the third volume he falls in love with a spy without knowing it. When she is beheaded, he uses his magic against the king, but is defeated and robbed of his will with a wyrd collar. After he has to watch how the Valg prince does terrible deeds in him, he can be freed from him at the end of the fourth part and becomes the new king of Adalan after the death of his father. In the fifth part he begins a relationship with the witch Manon Blackbeak, who saved his life during the attack on Rifthold.
  • King: He is the tyrannical ruler of Adarlan and wants to spread his power over the whole world. To suppress the magic in the land, he uses Wyrd keys. These ensure that magic can no longer be practiced. Only those who have the blood of the king in themselves, like Dorian Havilliard, can now use magic. At the same time, the power of those in possession of the only three Wyrd Keys becomes infinite. His goal is to get all three into his possession.

In the first volumes he is portrayed as the villain, but in reality it is not the king who is evil, but the valg (evil spirit) who has taken possession of him. He dies at the end of Part Four after admitting to having fought the valg inside him all his life.

  • Aedion Ashryver: He is the cousin of Aelin Ashryver Galathynius and only survived the murder of the royal family because he submitted to the king of Adarlan. He is a general the king intends to trust because he wears a wyrd ring. This is to ensure that he acts in the interests of the king. But he wisely replaced it with a duplicate. In reality, he belongs to the rebels who want to ensure that Aelin comes to the throne. Only in the fourth volume does he find out that Aelin is hiding behind Celaena Sardothien and becomes an important part of her court. In the fifth volume he begins a relationship with the shapeshifter Lysandra.
  • Rowan Whitethorn: He is an immortal Fae (immortal beings who use magic and can change their shape) and lives on the other continent (in Wendlyn). Rowan, like all of the Whitehorns, can control the wind and ice. He is the most powerful living fae after Lorcan. There he meets Celaena Sardothien and teaches her in a brutal but efficient way. He is indebted to the cruel Fae queen, Celaena's aunt. Its second form is a hawk. At the end of the third volume, Celaena frees him from her aunt's power and he pledges a blood oath to her. In the fourth part he begins a relationship with Celaena / Aelin and it becomes apparent that the two are soul mates. At the end of the fifth volume they get married. In addition, Rowan is Aelin's "Carranam" which means that in the event of a fight she can absorb Rowan's magic and vice versa.
  • Manon Blackbeak: She is a witch and heiress of her clan, she is also the leader of the dreaded "13". Her wyrd animal (wyvern) Abraxos is small and weak, but Manon sees intelligence in his eyes. In some places in the book, a good page seems to see through with her too. Her grandmother, the clan mother, does not tolerate this. In the fifth volume it becomes clear that Manon is the child of the last Crochan prince and a backbeak heiress. Her parents were killed by her clan mother for this connection. Manon becomes the last Crochan queen (of the good witches) who hunted her for decades. At the end of the fifth part, she joins in with her 13 Aelin and tries to find the remaining Crochan witches to fight with them in the war.
  • Nehemia Ytger: She is the princess of one of the oppressed countries. She lives in the action at the castle of the King of Adarlan in order to spy on him and to stand up for the rights of her country. She is friends with Celaena and brings her closer to the Wyrd signs. She also supports the rebels in their search for Aelin Ashryver Galathynius. She is murdered in the second volume, which is why Celaena faces her past.
  • Yrene Towers: Yrene flees Fenharrow to the southern continent after her mother, a healer, was burned alive in front of her eyes. Celaena helps her with a gift of money after Yrene, who works as a tap maid, helped her. Yrene has healing powers and is trained as a healer on the southern continent and befriends two members of the royal family. In the sixth volume she gets the assignment to heal chaol and falls in love with him. The two get married at the end of volume six and go to war to save their home countries. Yrene also has the ability to free a Valg demon from a human.
  • Lorcan Salvaterre : Lorcan is the most powerful living half-fae. He is subordinate to the Fae Queen Maeve and is the only lower Fae who works in her guard. He was taken in by Maeve because of his magic, as his magic comes from Hellas the Dead God personally. In volumes three and four he works for Mave against Rowan and Aelin, but in the fifth part, against Mave's orders, he begins to look for the Wyrd keys in order to destroy them. Maeve sends Fenrys, Gavriel and Vaughan, three other Fae from her guard, to kill him. At the end of the fifth volume, he and Gavriel form an alliance with Aelin because Mave dishonestly dismissed them from their blood oath.
