Thunder Force IV is the last part of the Technosoft series on the Sega Mega Drive and, according to the opinion of the trade press at the time, represents a "milestone".
It is a typical shooter scrolling from left to right with a futuristic background. The soundtrack, which was praised in the predecessor Thunder Force III , has been improved again. The technical possibilities of the Mega Drive were also largely used (e.g. numerous scrolling background layers, many details in the foreground).
A special feature was the level selection system at the beginning of the game. The player could determine in which order he wanted to play the first four levels of the game. The game must be completed by default with (depending on the level) up to four lives. However, there is a trick that can also be viewed as an Easter egg . Because if the player sets the number of lives to 0, the game starts with 99 lives.
As one of the first mega-drive games, Thunder Force IV was given a regional lock. So the Japanese game only ran on Japanese consoles. Some mail order companies therefore offered a conversion of the European mega drive and explicitly referred to Thunder Force IV in their advertising.
