The first-person narrator says that he is not a hero and that all the redemption he can offer is under a dirty car hood, but if they drive they will one day be among the winners.

Musical structure and musicians

Despite numerous instruments such as guitars and a saxophone, the piano dominates throughout the song and thus determines the sound. Other musicians are Clarence Clemons (saxophone), Garry Tallent (bass), Mike Appel (background vocals), Max Weinberg (drums) and Springsteen himself (vocals, guitar, harmonica).

The song has no chorus.
