The Thyasiridae are a shell - Family from the order of Lucinoida in the subclass Heterodonta . Many species in the family live in symbiosis with chemoautotrophic bacteria in the gills. About 130 species are currently known.

features

The same-flattened, inflated or even very flat housings are usually small (a few millimeters to centimeters), and round, ovoid, oblique-ovoid, rounded-rhomboidal or also rounded-polygonal in outline. They can be taller than wide or significantly longer than high. They are equilateral or approximately equilateral to clearly unequal, the vertebrae sit in front of the midline. The ligament is usually narrow. In the lock, teeth are usually only indicated, often the lock is also toothless. The coat is not indented. There are two sphincters.

The shell is usually thin, often translucent or transparent. There are only concentric growth strips.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The family is spread around the world. The species live in deeper water on or in soft, oxygen-poor and sulfide-rich soils.

The animals create a tube in the sediment that is roughly the length of the housing. This is attached inside with slime; the mucus is formed by the glands on the foot. The tube is not only used for protection and living, but is also used as an inflow opening for breathing water and z. T. also used for food. The foot is used for digging and is very flexible. It can be extended up to ten times the length of the housing.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established by William Healey Dall in 1900. Currently (2016) the following genera are included in the family:
