American Legion State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the community of Barkhamsted . The Peoples State Forest is immediately adjacent.

geography

The American Legion State Forest extends west of the west arm of the Farmington River , while east of that river lies the Peoples State Forest . The area along the romantic upper reaches of the Farmington River is a mountainous area with impressive cliffs and many rocks. The area is commonly referred to as the Pleasant Valley (Connecticut) . From the Farmington River (138 m) the terrain rises to 335 m above sea level .

history

The State Forest was acquired through donations from the American Legion veterans organization . The first acquisition was made in 1927 and the newest part was added in 2004. Various streets and buildings were laid out by the Civilian Conservation Corps , including the Nature Museum , which offers various educational programs in the summer.

free time activities

Recreational activities include canoeing on the Farmington River and hiking on trails named after eminent forestrymen and the American Legion. The American Legion State Forest Trails include the Henry Buck and Turkey Vultures Ledges trail and the Henry Ends Trail . Camping is available at the Austin F. Hawes Memorial Campground on the river.

fauna

The large wooded area offers enough retreats even for large animals. While hiking, you can easily meet the American moose , black bear , bobcat and turkey . Another characteristic bird is the helmeted woodpecker .
