Peoples State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the community of Barkhamsted . It is immediately connected to the American Legion State Forest , which adjoins to the south. The forest has 16 km (10 mi) of hiking trails in the blue-blazed system of the Peoples State Forest Trails .

geography

The Peoples State Forest extends east of the western arm of the Farmington River . The area along the romantic upper reaches of the Farmington River is a mountainous area with impressive cliffs and many rocks. The area is commonly referred to as the Pleasant Valley . From the Farmington River (138 m) the terrain rises to 335 m above sea level . When the Indians still lived in the area, they used a soapstone warehouse to obtain stones for making tools and jewelry.

Nature Museum

The park is also home to the Peoples State Forest Nature Museum (Stone Museum). In the stone building, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 , there is a natural history exhibition with many prepared animals, as well as some information about the pioneers, Indians, forest use and stone extraction and the CCC.

The museum was initially operated from 1935 to 1942. In 1992 it was reopened under the name "The Stone Museum", but in 2007 the name was changed back to the People's State Forest Nature Museum.
