Shenipsit State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the parishes of Somers , Ellington , and Stafford . The state forest comprises 11 dispersed territories. The headquarters is also home to the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum , which exhibits memorabilia from the CCC camps in the eastern United States. The forest is used intensively for logging.

The forest consists of eleven scattered parcels in the catchment area of ​​the eastern Connecticut River Valley . Much of it extends across the Eastern New England Uplift . The highest point in the area is Soapstone Mountain at 327.6 m (1,075 ') above sea level . Even higher is Bald Mountain at 1.121 '(325 m) in Somers parish territory. Bald Mountain is also the highest point along the eastern slope of the Connecticut River Valley between Long Island Sound and the Vermont border . The terrain rises up to 243 m above the valley floor. The ground is interspersed with boulders and large erratic blocks from the last ice age. Soapstone Mountain was used as a quarry for the extraction of soapstone in colonial times .

Freetime activities

The Shenipsit Trail , which runs 40 mi (40 mi) from East Hampton to Somers, also runs through the State Forest and passes the summit of Soapstone Mountain . The only observation tower in Northeast Connecticut stands on this summit. The original wildfire watchtower was dismantled in 1971. There are also a number of other forest roads.
