Thymelicus hamza is a butterfly from the family of the thick-headed butterflies (Hesperiidae).

features

The fore wing length is eleven to 13 millimeters. Viewed overall, the butterfly resembles the matt-piebald brown thick-headed butterfly . The top is bright red-brown. The fore wings are a little lighter in and around the cell and darker in the post-disc region. Scented stripes can also be seen. The underside is bright yellow-brown with a gray area between veins two and seven on the hind wings. In the female, the upper side in the discal region is a little lighter.

Geographical occurrence and habitat

Thymelicus hamza is distributed in North Africa from Morocco to Algeria , Tunisia and Libya . The moth can be found on grasslands rich in vegetation, rocky slopes and gorges from around 500 to 2400 meters. The species is widespread, but only occurs very locally.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation from May to the end of June.

Systematics

The species was first scientifically described in 1876 by Charles Oberthür under the name Hesperia hamza . The type locality is near Oran (Algeria). Some authors subdivide the species into two subspecies:

  • Thymelicus hamza hamza , the nominate subspecies in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia
  • Thymelicus hamza novissima Turati, 1921, Libya
