The ThyssenKrupp Materials Services GmbH (short: tkMX) is the holding company of the same business area of the diversified German industrial group ThyssenKrupp AG . Materials Services is active in the global trade in raw materials and is a technical and infrastructural service provider in the B2B area . Sales in the 2016/2017 financial year amounted to EUR 13.66 billion. In the past financial year, the division was able to increase its sales by a further 7 percent, to 14.65 billion euros.

Company structure and key figures

thyssenkrupp Materials Services is divided into three so-called business units. The Materials Distribution, Special Services and Special Materials business units combine a total of 74 subsidiaries with 480 branches. Materials Services employs more than 20,000 people and is represented in 40 countries.

Materials Services customers are primarily from Europe and North America. The largest customer groups are the metalworking and automotive industries as well as specialist dealers. As the "largest materials dealer in the western world ", the Materials Services division is also continuously expanding its service business, so that this already accounted for more than half of sales in the 2017/2018 financial year.

Digital transformation

In the so-called Digital Transformation Office (DTO for short) of Materials Services, pilot projects are supported that support the digitization goals of the business area. The aim is to expand the digital offerings for end consumers and major customers as well as a cultural change towards holistic and flexible cooperation.

In 2016 the B2C online shop "materials4me" was launched in Spain, Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland. Materials Services also has two B2B portals. The "Materials Services Online Portal" offers access to order documents from major customers. With “onlinelaserworks” materials can be cut fully automatically using a laser cutter according to CAD templates.

At the Hanover Fair it was also announced that thyssenkrupp AG will open a production center for additive manufacturing (3D printing) in Mülheim in 2017 .

Also in 2017, Materials Services presented a self-developed system for the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), which should be able to integrate not only modern, but also older systems from various manufacturers. The system called “toii” is primarily intended to promote automation in production and make processes more efficient.

At Tube 2018, Materials Services announced that in future customers should be able to order their needs via an omnichannel structure . This approach digitally summarizes "individual customer portals, EDI interfaces, online shops and future external platforms". This would give customers access to more than 150,000 products and services around the clock across all channels. This shows that digitization is the central driver for increasing the performance of Materials Services.
