Tibia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tibialia were called Roman socks .

Description and use

The tibiae were made of felt and covered the entire tibia . They were often worn under marching shoes, the caligae . The tibials were primarily used to protect against the cold, but they also cushioned light blows and bumps against the legs. They did not lie close to the body, but were tied to the leg with cords.

These felt socks were worn by the civil population and by Roman legionaries , who often wore the tibia with the feminalia . They were a counterpart to the Udones made of wool .
