The Tiergarten Staßfurt is a zoo in the city of Staßfurt in Saxony-Anhalt .
investment
The zoo, which is largely located within the city wall , covers an area of 5.5 hectares, on which around 500 animals from 72 animal species are kept. A heated building was built for exotic animals such as monkeys and a snake. Several enclosures are accessible. In addition to a large playground, the zoo also has a petting zoo and a year-round restaurant including a kiosk.
The grounds of the zoo are characterized by old trees. The tree species, like many grass and shrub species, are labeled.
history
The zoo was founded in 1954. It was an initiative of the city's mayor at the time. With the support of the population and local businesses, several enclosures for native animals such as fox , martens and pheasants were initially built , as well as a facility for parakeets . Today the Lebenshilfe Bördeland gGmbH is the sponsor. The zebras kept after 2000 are no longer in the population. In 2009 the petting zoo was modernized. The ring-tailed lemur enclosure was renewed in 2013.
Animal species
Several small species of monkeys are kept with common marmosets , ring- tailed lemurs and squirrel monkeys. Other exotic animal species are llamas , antelopes , meerkats , maras , but also leopards . In addition, wild cats , arctic wolves , prairie dogs, eagle owls and raccoons can be seen. Several animals typical of agriculture such as domestic pigs , chickens and goats are kept in an enclosure designed as a historic farm . Shetland ponies are also part of the zoo's animals .
particularities
There is also an old church bell in the zoo. The bell does not originate, as always assumed, from the St. John's Church , which was demolished in 1964/65 , the tower of which was increasingly tilted and became known as the Leaning Tower . It was a gift from the parish of Groß Mühlingen, which built a new church around 1900, to the Adam family to beautify their garden. This bell was cast around 1375.
