history

Idyll in the park

Born in Wuppertal, Wilhelm Eisenbart (1901–1970) moved to Gräfrath in 1932 and joined the Fauna ornamental poultry breeding association in the same year . The aim of this association was to create a home zoo in the Graefrather Heide. With the establishment of the zoo, the association was renamed the Fauna Nature and Bird Protection Association .

Due to the Second World War , the park was closed in 1942. In 1949, Eisenbart initiated the revival of the association's activities and, as chairman, the reconstruction of the home zoo. The reopening took place at Whitsun 1951. Wilhelm Eisenbart resigned from his office in 1968 for health reasons and died in 1970.

His son Reinold Eisenbart (* 1926), a member of the association since 1951, then took over the chairmanship. Until 1990 he was first chairman and managing director. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on April 16, 2008 for his services, among other things for his work for the zoo . Since June 7th, 2008 he has been an official honorary member of the association.

The club suffered a financial crisis in winter 2004/05. A new start took place in early 2006 with a new board of directors. The first chairman is now Ulrich Schramm and the second chairman is Gerd Postelmann (honorary member). Vera Schramm is the daughter of Reinold Eisenbart.
