The zoo Recklinghausen is located in the garden of Recklinghausen , just north of downtown. The Ruhrfestspielhaus and the Westphalian public observatory are also located in the city garden .

The zoo, like many of the zoos in the Ruhr area, was founded around 1930 and once had a remarkable number of animals. The city took over the zoo in 1960 and the animal population has been reduced since then. Due to a lack of space, it is not possible to keep wild animals such as lions appropriately on the site near the city .

In addition to some native animals, only the rhesus monkeys are reminiscent of the former zoo animal population. The zoo is home to pot-bellied pigs , foxes , ferrets , house elves , sheep , goats and many species of birds . Parakeets, large parrots and finches have lived in the bird house since 2000, while beos, zebra finches and other small songbirds fly freely between the visitors in the central area.

There is a petting zoo and a playground for children . Admission is free.
