The Tierpark Stadt Haag ( Tierpark der Stadtgemeinde Haag ) is a zoological garden in the Lower Austrian city of Haag in the park of Salaberg Castle . The operator is the municipality of Haag.
There are around 80 different animal species in the zoo, ranging from domestic animals such as squirrels and owls to non-native predator species such as brown bears and leopards . Young animals are also repeatedly born in the zoo, such as two Chinese leopards in 2011, which in the wild are endangered species and of which only around 100 animals live in captivity worldwide.
Emergence
In 1970 the municipality of Haag leased the castle park, which was not accessible at the time, from the castle owner and began to renovate the network of paths and ponds. In 1973 the park had to be briefly closed because of the foot-and-mouth disease that was rampant in Austria at the time . The zoo started with a bear enclosure. Over the years, numerous new animal species have been purchased and the zoo has been expanded. In the 1980s a bird song path was also laid out.
In the 1990s, the animal enclosures, such as the big cat enclosure or aviaries , were expanded and expanded.
The zoo was originally managed by Mayor Ernst Huber, who himself was the founder. To this day, the management remains with the mayor and the responsible city council.
