Animal insurance
A Tierversicherung is an insurance contract , which in granting coverage for certain loss events , there is the expense of pet owners.
Animal insurances include animal owner liability insurance, animal health insurance and animal owner legal protection insurance as well as compensation payments from the animal disease insurance fund according to Section 20 of the TierGesG .
Pet owner liability
The pet owner liability insurance protects pet owners in the event of third party liability claims if their pet causes personal injury or property damage ( § 833 BGB). For small animals such as cats or rabbits , in most cases no separate animal owner liability insurance is required. Any damage is covered by private liability insurance.
There is separate animal owner liability insurance for dogs and horses. Dog liability is mandatory in the federal states of Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia.
Animal health insurance
Animal health insurance is a voluntary insurance. Depending on the policy , dogs , cats and horses enjoy insurance cover in the event of illness, accidents or upcoming operations.
Pet owner legal protection insurance
Legal protection insurance for animal owners takes effect in legal disputes in which the animal owner needs legal assistance.
Agricultural crop loss insurance
If farm animals affected by an animal disease, such as horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or poultry, have to be killed due to official orders ( culling ), the owner will be compensated for the loss of animals from the animal disease fund (§§ 15 ff. Animal Health Act ). The compensation is based on the common value of the animal. It may not exceed certain maximum rates per animal ( Section 16 TierGesG). The yield of the animal and possible consequential damage costs can be covered by an additional yield damage insurance, as well as losses not covered by law, for example through fire, accident or theft.
