history

The company was founded in 1862 as an oil mill on the Tikkurila Rapids. The company passed through numerous hands over the next few years. When the import of linseed oil from Russia was interrupted by the First World War , the company was able to significantly expand its production. In 1919 a paint and varnish factory was built. After the Second World War, the general economic upswing led to a strong increase in sales. In 1975 the company was renamed from Schildt & Hallberg to Tikkurilan Väritehtaat Oy . Paint has been exported to the Soviet Union since the 1970s. In 1984 the British Donald Macpherson Group was taken over. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tikkurila was able to expand into the former Eastern Bloc states. By 2006 the company had become the market leader in Russia. In 2010, Tikkurila went public on the Helsinki Stock Exchange .
