Till van Rahden (* 1967 ) is a German historian and university professor in Montreal .

Life

Van Rahden received his doctorate in modern history at Bielefeld University in 1999 and was then a research assistant in the history department. He teaches modern and contemporary history at the Université de Montréal , from 2006 to 2016 as holder of the Canada Research Chair in German and European Studies. He is also an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University in Ottawa .

His research fields are the German and European history of the 19th and 20th centuries, gender issues , theory and history of modern democracies and the history of Jews in contemporary Europe. His research focus is on European history since the Enlightenment. He is particularly interested in the tension between the elusive promise of democratic equality and the ubiquity of cultural diversity and moral conflicts.
