Tilly (Villers-la-Ville)

Tilly is a southern district of Villers-la-Ville in the Belgian region of Wallonia with around 1,700 inhabitants (2010). The historic town center is made up of the former manor house and the neo-classical church of Saint-Martin , usually called Église de Tilly , which was built in the 19th century instead of a previous medieval building.

history

Tilly Castle and Manor came into the possession of the T'Serclaes patrician family from Brussels in 1448 . The branch of the family resident here has been called T'Serclaes von Tilly ever since . The name became known worldwide through the later imperial general Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly , who was born in the castle in 1559 .

In the course of the Belgian municipal reform of 1977, the previously independent municipality was incorporated into Villers-la-Ville.
