Timo Sarpaneva (born October 31, 1926 in Helsinki ; † October 2, 2006 there ) was a Finnish designer.

Life

After completing his training as a designer, he began working for the Iittala glassworks in 1950 , for which he also created glass sculptures that received great attention. He often made use of emerging technologies in his design work. So he worked with steam blowing technology in the early 1950s . In the mid-1950s, the i-line was developed for Iittala , which was positioned between utility and art glass in terms of both design and price. From the mid-1960s, his Finlandia series emerged from vases blown into charred wooden molds. In 1964 he developed the specially dyed ambience cotton fabrics. The Arkipelago glass series was created in 1978 and the Clariats art glass objects in 1984.

Sarpaneva worked with a wide variety of materials. In addition to glass and ceramics, textiles, silver, steel, cast iron and stainless steel were also used. He designed stage sets as well as lamps and created graphics. In addition, he built exhibitions. The Finnish sections he created for the H-55 exhibition in Helsingborg and the 1967 World Exhibition in Montreal became known .

He was buried in the Hietaniemi cemetery in Helsinki.
