The Timoleague and Courtmacsherry Railway was a 14 km (9 miles) long light railroad in Ireland between Timoleague and Courtmacsherry .

history

The railway company was founded in October 1888 and its railway line started operating on April 21, 1891. It was built in Irish broad gauge with 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in ) gauge after originally the construction of a narrow gauge railway with a gauge of 914 mm (3 ft) was planned. There were two companies, the Ballinascarthy and Timoleague Junction Light Railway and the Timoleague and Courtmacsherry Extension Light Railway , collectively known as the Timoleague and Courtmacsherry Light Railway . The railway line went over to the Great Southern Railways in 1925 . Initially, two steam locomotives were used by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds , named Slaney and St. Molaga . In 1894 a third Hunslet steam locomotive called Argadeen was added.

Passenger traffic was stopped on February 24, 1947 due to a lack of coal. After that, the train was still used for excursions in summer and for sugar beet harvest in winter . The excursion trips started in the summer from the Cork Albert Quay Railway Station. In the fall of 1960, the entire West Cork Railway stopped operating without warning.
