The Tinuy-an Waterfall is one of the widest waterfalls in the Philippines, around 95 meters wide . It is located in the Barangay Burboanan of the municipality of Bislig in eastern Mindanao . About 18 kilometers from the city center of Bislig, the waterfall is the main attraction of the municipality and can be reached by visitors from there in just under an hour. In sunny weather, a rainbow forms in the morning between about 9 and 11 a.m. before the main fall.

geography

It is the Bislig River, which falls here about halfway between its origin and the confluence with the Pacific in the south of the Surigao del Sur province over a total of 4 steps 55 meters deep. Hidden in the wooded area, the waterfall was difficult to reach for a long time and was mostly only known to the local population. Only with the increasing expansion of the NRJ-Cumawas-Tinuy-an-Falls-Straße did the waterfall become more accessible and has been marketed as a national tourist destination for several years. In 2017, as part of a project for the expansion of access roads to airports, seaports and tourist destinations of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), a wooden bridge on the route to the Tinuy-an-Fall is to be replaced by a concrete bridge, making the approach to the waterfall is further simplified for visitors.

Easiest for visitors to reach are the lower two levels of the waterfall, of which the second level is the main one. Via installed metal stairs, visitors can continue up to the foot of the third step. The fourth step, which is a little higher, remains hidden for most visitors, as it is not easily accessible.

Origin of name

According to a legend, settlers from nearby Magdiwata Mountain once lived in the area around the waterfall and were enslaved by members of a warring tribe from Agusan. You had to do labor services for your gentlemen, including driving small boats, so-called barotos , on the Bislig River. One day, according to legend, the slaves purposely steered the Barotos into the thundering waters of the waterfall, thereby ending the oppression. The name Tinuy-an is derived from the word tuyo of the local Visayan language , which means something like goal or intention . This became Tinuyo-an , a deliberate endeavor aimed at achieving a specific result .
