Tipula vernalis is a mosquito from the family of the Schnaken (Tipulidae).

features

The snakes reach a body length of 16-19 mm. The head and thorax are colored gray. There is a dark colored triangular spot on the thorax. The eyes of the gnats are bright green. After death, this color is lost. A characteristic dark band runs over the top of the orange-colored abdomen . Another characteristic of the species of gnat is the pattern of the dark-colored wing veins .

distribution

Tipula vernalis occurs in large parts of Europe and is quite common. The species is also represented in Great Britain.

Way of life

The snake species is found in moist forest biotopes and swamp areas. The gnats can be seen from April to June. The larvae living in the ground feed on the roots of various grasses. The adult flies suckle plant nectar.
