Forms of Court Tombs - Tiredigan as below right

The Court Tomb of Tiredigan ( Irish Tír Roideagáin ) in the townland of the same name southwest of Three Mile House (or Threemilehouse, Irish Teach na dTrí Mhíle ), west of the R189 (road) in County Monaghan in Ireland , is possibly a "double court tomb". Court Tombs are among the megalithic chamber tombs ( English chambered tombs ) of the British Isles . With around 400 specimens, they are found almost exclusively in Ulster in the north of Ireland or in Northern Ireland .

description

The megalithic complex, referred to on the historical map as the “Cairnbaine Giants Grave”, is located in a trapezoidal northeast-southwest oriented stone mound about 36.0 m long and 19.0 m wide, mainly at the wider northeast end. In front of the associated gallery are the remains of a court measuring 6.5 × 5.5 m with two preserved stones from the exedra . Two side posts and a lintel provide access to the 4.0 m long and 1.7 m wide gallery, the buried end of which is formed by two side posts that indicate a continuation of the gallery. At the opposite end of the cairn is a 2.3 x 1.2 m open chamber with double posts to the west. However, the remains of a second courtyard have not been preserved.

Individual evidence

  1. Facilities with galleries and courtyards at both ends of the Cairns are called "Double-Court" Tombs or Cairns. Occasionally the cairns of this type are rectangular, but the majority are trapezoidal.
