A placemat (also a set , place mat or doily ) is an underlay that is mostly used for eating, but also for handicrafts and above all has the function of protecting the table. They are made of different materials such as plastic, bast fiber , or felt .

Place mats used when eating can also be a decorative element of the table setting . In the inexpensive catering sector, it is often made of paper or foil and is printed with advertising or the menu.
