In the following years it was continuously improved and updated, among other things to support successor consoles such as the PlayStation 2 , the GameCube , the PlayStation Portable and the Xbox .

development

In 2005 and 2006 in particular, some fundamental and important changes were made to the engine:

  • Support for the PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Wii .
  • A new renderer with a focus on multi and graphics processors.
  • A new audio system with a focus on software mixing and audio effects.
  • A new multifunctional physics engine that is particularly suitable for displaying disaster scenarios.
  • New system effects.
  • An improved editor based on technology from Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

The engine is particularly characterized by the use of several technologies. Although the engine has been used in one form or another in several games since its completion, Prototype was the first video game to come onto the market with the mature, completely redesigned and finished version of the engine.

features

The game editor, called gym , has several functions, including the creation of film sequences, special effects, lighting or animations using scripts. It has a user interface that is supposed to make operation easier and it supports Windows Build . It can be used parallel to the running game. Changes are transferred to the game in a ratio of 1: 1. He also has a LUA editor.

The integrated client-server application Pipeline , which is based on Python and MySQL , supports the caching of larger graphic areas. In this way, several computers in the network can edit, split and save the same graphic. This is advantageous for more modern video games that have several gigabytes of graphics and audio files and that have to edit, load and save them several times a day. The rendering engine is modified specifically for each project. The audio engine used by the game editor and built-in audio tools provides specifications and customization of a mixing system and DSP effects. It also provides support for mixer interfaces to which hardware mixers can be connected. In this way, special, user-defined sounds can be integrated into the game parallel to the running game.

The engine includes a special dialog management system, which has more than 10,000 audio files in several languages and subtitles, a fully equipped character animator and various physics databases .
