Prototype is a computer game developed by Radical Entertainment for the Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 and Windows and released on June 12, 2009. In Germany it was not released due to the excessive depiction of violence. The sequel Prototype 2 was released on April 24, 2012 for consoles and in July 2012 for the PC.

action

The game takes place in New York City . Main character Alex (other John) Mercer wakes up in the gene lab "Gentek", which, as the game turns out, is involved in a conspiracy . He can no longer remember his past, but he seems to have superhuman powers. Now he seeks revenge on the people who have destroyed his life. During his escape from the laboratory, he learns that he has the ability to absorb people and thus their memories and appearance. By consuming more people, he finds out more about his past and learns that he is the puppet of a conspiracy. Meanwhile, a strange infection is spreading across the city , turning people into zombies . The game is now told in days, with each additional day a larger percentage of all residents is infected. In his search for his past, he gets help from his sister and a doctor, among other things. The enemy are the US mercenaries from "Blackwatch", in particular a figure called The Specialist . The more Alex's memory comes back, the more skills come back. For example, he can transform his arms into huge, clawed claws, a sword, a kind of whip or heavy hammer fists.
In the course of the game it turns out that the virus that panics New York City has long been known to the military under the name "BLACKLIGHT". A test of the virus (then a different, far less dangerous strain called "REDLIGHT") in the small town of Hope, Idaho got out of control, so the Blackwatch soldiers were ordered to wipe out the entire population, with the only survivors being the mysterious woman Elizabeth Greene ( known under the code name "MOTHER") and her child (code name "PARIAH"), who were then brought to the Gentek laboratory.
Alex learns a lot about his past life by devouring (referred to in the game as "consume") important military commanders. He worked at Gentek, where another virus research was carried out, which also got out of control and the project was subsequently discontinued. Afterwards, all scientists who worked on the project should be eliminated by Blackwatch. Alex Mercer escaped with a sample (DX-1118 variant A, "BLACKLIGHT") of the virus, but was surrounded by soldiers in "Penn Station". He decided to drag as many people as possible to their deaths and dropped the sample, whereupon the virus was released. The DNA of the virus mixed with the Mercer's and caused him to resurrect with his superhuman powers. The main character of the game is therefore not Alex Mercer at all, but just a copy of Mercer, who made the virus when the epidemic was triggered, but who initially believes it is Mercer herself. Blackwatch calls it "ZEUS".
On his way to uncovering the incidents, he, more or less voluntarily, releases Elizabeth Greene from the Gentek lab in the hope that she will help him, but things will only get worse afterwards. It turns out that she serves as the "brain" for all infected and does everything to destroy Alex and the military. Her son "PARIAH" only appears in sections of the "Web of Intrigue". In this view, all memory sequences are saved that Alex records when he “consumes” the marked targets. One sequence mentions that “PARIAH” is something completely new: Elizabeth Greene is said to be an incomplete version with defects of the virus, Alex “a little more” and PARIAH possibly the ultimate representation of the virus. It is therefore not unlikely that, in the event of a sequel, PARIAH would play a central role.
As the infection in New York becomes increasingly unpredictable, the military decides to destroy Manhattan with an atomic bomb. Mercer, or the Blacklight Virus, infiltrates the US. Aircraft carrier ( USS Ronald Reagan ) that houses the bomb and flies it far enough from the city that he drops it into the sea before it explodes in Manhattan.

Graphics engine

The game is based on the same engine that Radical Entertainment used for Hulk: Ultimate Destruction . The Titanium engine makes it possible to display hosts of enemies on the screen at the same time without the system performance suffering. In addition, it is particularly suitable for depicting disaster scenarios.

Prototype 2

The sequel to Prototype was released on April 24, 2012 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 , and for Windows in Europe on July 27 of the same year. The player tries as Sergeant James Heller, Alex Mercer or his copy. Heller was stationed in Iraq during the first part . During this time, his family is killed in New York. After his return, which takes place in the "hot phase" of the fight between the infected and the soldiers, he too is killed in New York. But the virus, in the form of Alex Mercer, recognizes James Heller's potential and infects him. Thus James Heller also receives the powers of Mercer. Heller blames Alex for the whole chaos in NY and therefore wants to kill him.

Simultaneously with the publication of the second part, Dark Horse Comics is publishing a comic series about the game.

In Germany only Prototype 2 has been released for sale.
