Titlis glacier
The Titlis Glacier (also called Galtiberg Glacier ) is a small glacier near Engelberg in the Central Swiss Alps on the Titlis ( 3238 m above sea level ).
location
The glacier is mainly located on the western and northern flanks of the mountain. The glacier reaches down to about 2750 m . The remainder of the glacier of 1.8 km 2 of ice surface (2007) is mainly in the canton of Obwalden and a small part in Nidwalden .
There are two mountain railways on the glacier , the chairlift and the glacier lift of the Engelberg ski area . Just below the summit, at 3,041 meters above sea level, there is Europe's highest suspension bridge called "TITLIS Cliff Walk", which is 100 meters long and only one meter wide. It spans an abyss of 500 meters and offers a head for heights a magnificent view into the depths. Your visit is free of charge in good weather.
Climate change
The glacier is badly affected by global warming . As in other glacier ski areas , attempts are being made to cover the part of the glacier (about 0.7 km 2 ) that can be used for winter skiing as a glacier protection measure in summer with white reflective cloths in order to reduce the loss of ice. It is believed that the Titlis Glacier will no longer exist in twenty years.
