Titus Statilius Optatus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Titus Statilius Optatus was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD . Individual stations of his career are known through an inscription. His career is in the inscription as cursus inversus , d. H. in descending order.

The military career of Optatus went beyond the usual tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . As prefect, he took over the management of the Cohors I Lucensium , which was stationed in the province of Syria . He then became a tribune in the Legio VI Ferrata , which was also used in the east of the Roman Empire. The third stage was the post of tribune in the Legio VI Victrix , which he took up either in Germania inferior or in Britannia . Most recently he was prefect of the Ala Afrorum , which was stationed in Germania inferior.

After his military career, Optatus took on civil administrative functions. He worked as Procurator Augusti first in a census in the province of Britain, then in a census in part of Gaul. The two posts were linked to an annual income of 60,000 sesterces . Subsequently he was entrusted with the administration of the iron mines ( procurator Augusti ferrariarum ), probably those in Gaul; this post was linked to an annual income of 100,000 sesterces.

Next he was entrusted with the administration of the imperial property ( procurator Augusti ad patrimonium ); this post was associated with an annual income of 200,000 sesterces. With this activity he came into the direct environment of the emperor, to whom he remained connected with his next task as procurator Augusti hereditatium . At the same time he was entrusted as a Flamen Carmentalis with one of the lower-ranking priestly offices in Rome. His last two offices are not preserved in the inscription; He probably took over the duties of Procurator Augusti a rationibus first and then that of Praefectus annonae .
