The park
introduction
The protected area is the only one in Sierra Leone that is locally administered and supported by the Environmental Foundation for Africa .
At the end of the 19th century, one half of the island was given away by Queen Nyarroh von Barri out of love to the chief of the Koya and established as a protected area at an early stage. It was officially proclaimed in the 1980s.
getting there
The park can be reached by off-road vehicle via Bo City .
Accommodation and facilities
There are tent sites at various places in the reserve, but they are very spartan. No bedding or sheets are provided. Water is available, but not as drinking water. You can go shopping in the village one kilometer away. Local food is prepared in the accommodations themselves.
In the Visitors Center there is a small souvenir shop and a constantly updated map with the last places where rare species were observed.
activities
- At the northern end of the island there is a small and fine sandy beach. Here you can bathe with caution against crocodiles and hippos.
- Boat trips are available from the Visitors Center on the Moa River.
- Guided walks are the highlight of a trip to Tiwai Island; More than 50 kilometers of hiking trails are available.
fauna and Flora
There are more than 135 species of birds in the wildlife sanctuary. These include eight different species of hornbills. The eleven different primate species make Tiwai the most important monkey sanctuary on earth. The Tiwai chimpanzees are among the most intelligent and use various tools extensively. Also worth seeing are the extremely rare pygmy hippos .
More than 700 plant species have been registered on the island.
