description

To be on Top is a music themed action game where the aim of the player is to create a song that hits the top ten on the charts . The game begins on a street where the player has direct control of a character from a side view. Along the street are various places (houses, a disco, a recording studio, and a television station called Rainbow TV Studio) that can be visited. However, the buildings cannot be visited in any order as each building requires specific qualifications. If these are not met, the player can lose the game. With skillful evasive maneuvers on the street, you have to prevent roller-skaters with ghetto blasters from stealing your inspirations or running over you in tanks.

To create the song, the player must first gather musical inspiration. This is done through a mini-game on a TV screen, there are four different types of inspiration that can be gathered: bass lines, accompaniments, melodies and sequences. By moving a crosshair and clicking on the inspirations as they move around the screen, you can collect those inspirations. Then the keyboard is used to compose the song. This is done by choosing and combining the various inspirations. Once the song is composed, a synthesizer is used to create a demo tape which is then brought into the studio where one of 16 drum sequences can be added to the song. If the song reaches a top 3 position in the charts, the player receives an invitation to the TV studio. There the player can perform the song on stage and must get as many spectators as possible.
