Scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute named it in 1987. It is named after Eyvind Tofte (1880–1968), the captain of the Odd I on the Antarctic voyage financed from 1926 to 1927 by the Norwegian whaling entrepreneur Lars Christensen .
