TOGA

TOGA or TO / GA , short for Take-Off / Go-Around , is a function of the autopilot or flight director and the automatic thrust control in commercial aircraft , which is operated at the push of a button. The purpose of this function is to bring the engines quickly and precisely to the maximum permitted power when starting or in the event of a go-around, so that the thrust levers do not have to be operated by hand. In modern aircraft, the flight management computer u. a. The power required for the maneuver is calculated based on runway length, wind speed, temperature and aircraft weight, which can reduce engine wear. On the other hand, the autopilot or flight director helps to bring the aircraft into the required flight position. The TO / GA function has two modes, the start mode (take-off) and the go-around mode . The take-off mode can only be used with flight director, but without autopilot, while the go-around mode can also be used with autopilot.

With some aircraft types, when the TO / GA switch is operated during an automatic ILS approach with asymmetrical thrust (one-sided engine failure) and automatically counter-steering rudder position, this is initially maintained by the autopilot. Only when the TOGA mode is deactivated do the rudders return to neutral, whereupon the pilot has to react by stepping on the rudder pedals.
