The Tōkyō Kōgyō Daigaku ( Japanese 東京 工業 大学 , German Technical University Tokyo , English Tokyo Institute of Technology , short: Tōkōdai ( 東 工 大 ), Tokyo Tech , Titech or TIT ) is a state technical university in Japan . The main campus is in Ōokayama, Meguro-ku , Tokyo .

history

In 1881 the Tokyo Industrial School ( 東京 職工 学校 , Tōkyō shokkō gakkō ) was founded. Besides the University of Tokyo , this was the first state technical school in Japan. In 1890 it was renamed the Tokyo Technical School, and in 1901 it developed into the Tokyo Higher Technical School ( 東京 高等 工業 学校 , Tōkyō kōtō kōgyō gakkō ).

In 1923 the Great Kantō earthquake destroyed the school buildings, and in 1924 the school moved from its founding location ( 35 ° 41 ′ 59.8 ″  N , 139 ° 47 ′ 20.8 ″  E ) to today's Ōokayama campus. In 1929 it became a legal daigaku (college) and was renamed Tokyo Technical College.

It was one of the three Japanese state technical colleges before the Pacific War (Tokyo, Osaka and Ryojun ). Only the Tokyo University of Technology remained to this day; Osaka University of Technology was merged into Osaka Imperial University in 1933 and Ryojun University of Technology in Japanese-occupied China was closed in 1945.
