Tom and Jerry (Cocktail)
Tom and Jerry is the name for an alcoholic hot drink that belongs to the category of Eggnogs . In the United States , it is traditionally drunk at Christmas or New Years . It has been documented since the 19th century.
The main ingredients include a beaten egg yolk, whipped egg whites, brandy and rum, and hot milk or hot water. In addition, there are usually sugar and spices such as allspice , cinnamon , nutmeg and cloves . In the German-speaking world, the drink would be called a variant of egg punch . The drink is drunk hot.
There are different details about the authorship of the recipe. On the one hand, it is attributed to Jerry Thomas , an American bartender and restaurateur who claimed during his lifetime to have invented the drink as a young man in San Francisco in 1847 and named it after his two mice; he also published it in his 1862 standard work How to Mix Drinks, or the Bon-Vivant's Companion . According to another version, the drink on Pierce Egan returns, the author of a bitingly humorous description of the big city life of London entitled Tom and Jerry, or Life in London , which is said to have invented back in the 1820s.
Author Damon Runyon (1880–1946) mentions the drink in his short story Dancing Dan's Christmas : “This hot Tom and Jerry is a traditional drink that everyone in this country uses to celebrate Christmas, and it is so popular indeed, that many people think that Christmas was just invented to have an excuse to drink Tom and Jerry (...) ”.
