Toma (Papua New Guinea)
Toma is a place on the Gazelle Peninsula in New Britain (German formerly Neupommern) in the Bismarck Archipelago , which is now part of Papua New Guinea . It is located 13 kilometers inland from Kokopo (German Herbertshöhe).
On August 6, 1914, the governor's seat of German New Guinea was moved from Rabaul to Toma. The place had a police station, a radio station, a rest home and a Bismarck tower. To the west is the Varzinberg . After the lost battle at Bita Paka on September 11, 1914, the last German defenders under Eduard Haber retreated to Toma and capitulated on September 17, 1914.
