The Vunakokor ( English Mount Varzin , former name: Varzinberg ) is a stratovolcano in Kokopo District on the Gazelle Peninsula in Papua New Guinea . It is located 14 km southwest of Kokopo and 5 km southwest of Toma . It is about 581 m high. The former name from the German colonial era is based on the former German town of Varzin in Hinterpommern , which was bought by Otto von Bismarck in 1867 . The English name Mount Varzin is also used to this day.

Geography and climate

The land around Vunakokor is flat in the southwest, but hilly in the northeast and almost entirely covered by forest. The population density is about 17 people per square kilometer.

The climate is tropical. The average temperature was 23 degrees Celsius (° C). The warmest month is January with 24 ° C and the coolest June with 22 ° C. The average rainfall is 2,882 millimeters per year. The rainiest month is July with an average of 406 millimeters of rain and November with 139 millimeters of rain.
